When the JT Lady Jaguars won game one of this year’s National Basketball League playoff final against the JKL Lady Dolphins, many expected a long, tough series. But after five games, the Jaguars were on the losing end, falling 4 to 1 on aggregate.
For those who hoped the Jaguars would push the now five time champions the way the UCU Lady Canons did in the semifinals, it was a major letdown. None felt it more than Jaguars coach Sudi Ulanga, though he still appreciated the effort his players showed even in defeat.
Ulanga looks back on the final with a sense of realism. As they enter the off season, he says the club’s priority is adding another forward to strengthen their front court.
“There is no doubt that we have a good team. That is why we reached the final, unlike the previous year when we stopped at the semifinals. But it is also important to note that we have to do more,” Ulanga said.
By more, he means matching the champions in every way. He pointed out that the major difference between them and JKL was the Hope Akello factor.
“Her impact on both ends of the court made the difference. But even more importantly, she showed real leadership on the floor. We need that as well. And that, as we all know, comes with experience. Akello has played at the Afrobasket, and that has given her a lot of confidence,” Ulanga said.
Even so, Ulanga believes most of their roster is complete. But at least one more experienced big who has played at the top level would elevate them significantly. It would also ease the heavy load carried by Mercy Batamuliza and Sarah Ageno.
He did not reveal who they are targeting, but the search is clearly underway across the continent.
