After match-day seven, Police sit atop the Uganda Premier League table with 14 points.
They face Kitara at the Kira Road Police grounds on Thursday 27 November, a game many would expect the Cops to win. But even with his side performing well, coach Matia Lule insists his team is still a work in progress.
“I think we can do better than what we have managed so far. For example, our execution in key moments has been a bit suspect, which I do not like. A case in point is the poor goals we gave away against SC Villa, which exposed our lack of concentration,” Lule said.
On the whole, Police have been conceding in almost every game this season. Out of seven games, they have let in eight goals.
According to Lule, this is not good enough, and he is working tirelessly to eliminate the sloppiness in his team. He believes the main challenge has been forming new defensive partnerships.
“Almost all our defenders are playing together for the first time. So we know that as they continue to learn each other, they will improve as a unit. But at the same time, the duty to defend cannot only be left to the defenders. The whole team must defend. For example, if the attackers do not press, it becomes easy for opponents to reach our defensive line,” Lule explained.
That said, Lule is pleased that his team has scored 12 goals so far. It is clear he has worked hard to make his charges a more offensive unit, and that effort is beginning to pay off.
