Terminal lucidity is a medical term used to describe a sudden surge of energy in a person moments before they die. Caregivers and loved ones will observe symptoms like consciousness, enthusiastic speech and activity, clarity in memory, plus the desire to eat or drink.
That is what Ugandan cricket experienced in the past two days at the inaugural ICC Women’s T20 Emerging Nations Trophy in Thailand.
Just one matchday after fighting for victory against Papua New Guinea — a win by four runs sealed by captain Janet Mbabazi in the very last over — the Victoria Pearls catastrophically collapsed against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday morning.
The team, unchanged from the previous match, had the opportunity to inch closer to the tournament’s runaway leaders but faced a more-than-ready side which shattered their hopes.
UAE won the toss and elected to bowl first. They restricted Victoria Pearls to just 75 runs and picked up 8 wickets. Victoria Pearls’ batting woes were on full display as the middle batting order matched in quick succession and the tail end returned to the shed with no runs in the final over.
Defending that score would have been a pipe dream for the Victoria Pearls in the second innings. And true to form, UAE only used 8.2 overs to chase it down with no loss of wickets.
