The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has completed an inspection of Hoima City Stadium, clearing the newly built facility for commissioning by President Yoweri Museveni as Uganda prepares to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Chief of Defence Forces toured the stadium on Thursday, five months after contractors delivered the project ahead of schedule.
He was guided through the facility by Project Manager Murat Altun, who highlighted key features that include VIP spaces, modern changing rooms, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, an external training pitch, and a two-thousand-seat indoor arena fitted with a basketball court.
The tour drew several senior officials, among them SUUMA Chairman Selim Bora, CEO Envar Sayan, Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang, the National Council of Sports leadership, and the Mayor of Hoima City.
Gen Kainerugaba used the visit to underline the need to safeguard the stadium’s standards as the country accelerates infrastructure delivery for AFCON 2027.
He asked the Sports Ministry and the National Council of Sports to maintain what he called a world-class benchmark in all upcoming projects.
He said, “This stadium must set the tone for what we want to achieve as a country. We have to protect its quality and ensure future facilities match or exceed this level.”
Hoima City Stadium, with a capacity of twenty thousand, is one of three venues earmarked to host tournament matches in 2027 alongside Namboole Stadium and Akii-Bua Stadium.
The government has positioned it as a flagship investment to support sports development and stimulate growth within the Hoima economic corridor.
Gen Kainerugaba reaffirmed his support for expanding high-performance sports infrastructure, saying, “If we want Ugandan athletes to compete at the top, we must give them the best possible environment. Facilities like this are essential for success.”
The stadium is now set for official commissioning ahead of its integration into national and continental sports calendars.
