The 15th East African Inter-Parliamentary Games officially began in Kampala on Saturday after Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa opened the regional event at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The launch brought together lawmakers from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and the East African Legislative Assembly in a show of regional solidarity.
The day started with a lively assembly at the Parliament of Uganda before hundreds of legislators marched to Kololo for the formal opening.
The programme later shifted to Philip Omondi Stadium, where hosts Uganda faced Burundi in the opening football fixture.
Tayebwa, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, encouraged lawmakers to continue embracing sport, noting its role in strengthening cooperation within the East African Community.
State Minister for Education and Sports Peter Ogwang delivered a similar message, urging parliamentarians across the region to fully commit to the Games because sport remains a powerful tool for unity.
Speakers from various delegations echoed the same call. EALA Speaker Joseph Ntakirutimana confirmed that Somalia will host the 2026 edition, a first for the newest member of the bloc.
With the opening ceremony concluded, competition moves indoors on Sunday. Netball, basketball and volleyball for both men and women will take place at MTN Arena Lugogo from 8.00 AM to 8.00 PM as the eleven day programme gets underway.
