Uganda opened the 15th East African Inter Parliamentary Games with a strong all round performance in Kampala, setting the pace in their bid to retain the overall title.
The hosts beat Burundi 4 to 0 in the opening football match at Phillip Omondi Stadium, a result that set the tone for a dominant day across several disciplines. Uganda followed up with wins in volleyball, netball, and basketball, extending an early lead on home ground.
Mbale Industrial Division MP Karim Masaba said the competitive edge is important, but the event carries a wider purpose.
“Burundi is a strong side, but we were well prepared. In these games, there is no winner or loser because our goal is to unite the East African Community,” Masaba said.
Mityana District Woman MP Joyce Bagala, who plays volleyball, said the team arrived well tuned for another title run.
“Team Uganda has been overall champions since 2023. My volleyball team won gold last year, and we are targeting gold again this year,” Bagala said.
Legislators from across the region echoed that the games remain a platform for cooperation, with sport used to foster unity and deepen East African integration.
Competition resumes tomorrow with athletics, tug of war, and more football fixtures.
