The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has paid tribute to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong following his retirement from international football, announced just days after his inclusion in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad.
The 32-year-old defender ends a decade-long career with 83 caps plus a record five strikes at AFCON, the most ever by a defender.
He was named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast.
In a statement, the NFF praised Troost-Ekong’s “dedicated, selfless and humble” leadership, highlighting his contributions across three AFCON campaigns and the FIFA World Cup.
The federation said he leaves “a fulfilled man” and pledged support for his future in football.
