FIFA President Gianni Infantino is under investigation by the governing body’s ethics committee for allegedly breaching rules on political neutrality.
The move follows a complaint from human rights group FairSquare, who allege Mr. Infantino committed “four clear breaches” by awarding the inaugural Fifa peace prize to US President Donald Trump last week at the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington DC.
FairSquare argues that giving a prize of this nature to a sitting political leader is inherently a breach of neutrality.
The group also cited Mr. Infantino’s repeated public and social media posts endorsing President Trump, including claiming he “definitely deserves” the Nobel Peace Prize.
Programme director Nicholas McGeehan said the issue is broader than political support, claiming Fifa’s governance structure permits Mr. Infantino to “openly flout the organisation’s rules.”
Mr. Infantino told President Trump during the ceremony, “you can always count, Mr President, on my support.”
