Uganda’s oldest golf clubhouse has entered a new era following the official commissioning of the renovated Entebbe Club clubhouse, highlighted by the unveiling of an exclusive Johnnie Walker Lounge.
The refurbishment was unveiled on Saturday night in Entebbe, with Uganda Breweries Limited, key partners and Entebbe Club leadership marking the completion of a project that modernises the iconic 1913 structure while preserving its historic character.
The upgraded facility introduces contemporary luxury to one of the country’s most significant sporting landmarks, offering members and visiting golfers an enhanced club experience.
Speaking on behalf of Uganda Breweries Limited Managing Director Félicité Nson, UBL Finance and Strategy Director Josephine Njoroge praised the club’s leadership and membership for delivering what she described as a milestone that balances heritage with progress. She reaffirmed UBL’s long standing partnership with Entebbe Club, which has spanned more than a decade.
“On behalf of Uganda Breweries Limited and Johnnie Walker, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to the leadership of Entebbe Club, the project team, and the entire membership for delivering such a magnificent milestone,” Njoroge said.
“Our relationship with Entebbe Club is one we hold with great pride. It is rooted in shared values, excellence, consistency, and a commitment to elevating golf in Uganda. This longevity is not accidental; it reflects trust, ambition, and a shared belief that together we can elevate both the game and the experiences around it. As you officially open this beautiful new clubhouse, it feels only right that Johnnie Walker, the world’s most iconic celebration whisky, stands with you.”
Njoroge added that UBL remains committed to supporting the future growth of golf in Uganda, beyond landmark projects and milestones.
Guests were taken through Entebbe Club’s rich history, including a rare viewing of original artefacts such as the 1913 members’ register and the club’s certificate of registration. These documents will be permanently displayed in the new Johnnie Walker Lounge on what has been named the Wall of Progress.
Uganda’s Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, served as the guest of honour and applauded both UBL and MTN for their role in delivering the renovation and for their enduring partnerships with the club.
“I have served this club before, as secretary and later as chairman, and I can confidently say this is a remarkable transformation,” Kiwanuka said. “The facilities we see today are simply outstanding. If people start staying here longer, UBL and MTN should take it as a compliment,” he added, before officially declaring the clubhouse open.
Entebbe Club chairman Jacob Byamukama described the commissioning as a defining moment in the institution’s history, crediting members and partners for giving the clubhouse a renewed identity without losing its soul.
“This day will go down in history as the moment the current generation of members and partners gave this clubhouse a new lease of life,” Byamukama said. “We were deliberate about preserving the character of the building while giving it a vibrant, modern touch. Very few places look and feel like this.”
Byamukama paid special tribute to UBL for its consistent support of the club since 2017, noting that the partnership had been central to the project’s success.
The ceremony brought together former chairmen, presidents, club captains and guests from across the golfing fraternity. The evening concluded with dinner and a live performance by renowned saxophonist Bahati, closing a night that celebrated history, partnership and the future of golf in Uganda.
