Kampala University has flagged off a 170-member contingent to represent the institution at the 20th Association of Uganda University Sports Games, due to start on December 19, 2025 at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.
The delegation includes 145 athletes and 25 officials who will compete across 11 sports disciplines. The flag-off ceremony was held on Wednesday afternoon at the university’s main campus in Ggaba and was presided over by proprietor and vice chancellor Prof Badru Ddungu Kateregga, alongside senior administrators and family members.
Addressing the athletes, Kateregga urged them to uphold discipline, courage and integrity, values he said have defined Kampala University since its founding in 1999. He challenged the team to compete fiercely while maintaining proper conduct on and off the field.
“Remain disciplined even when faced with unfairness, raise your concerns respectfully, and push beyond your limits. Kampala University is associated with winning. Play with courage and integrity because those values define us,” Kateregga said.
The vice chancellor also struck a lighter tone when he jokingly warned AUUS vice president and Kampala University sports tutor Martha Soigi against favouring other institutions during the games, drawing laughter from the audience.
“As AUUS vice president, please do your best not to work with others to cheat Kampala University,” he said.
Kateregga used the occasion to raise concerns about the cost of participation in the AUUS Games, arguing that high fees continue to limit wider involvement from universities across the country.
“There are more than 70 universities, yet only 24 are participating. I have spent over Shs180 million on this team, funds that could have been used to construct classrooms or purchase computers. However, I chose to invest in sports. AUUS should set affordable fees to allow more universities to participate,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the technical team, Soigi confirmed that preparations are complete and the athletes are ready for competition. She added that the contingent will depart for Mukono on Friday.
Kampala University will compete in football, basketball, volleyball, netball, handball, athletics, swimming, woodball, chess, darts and karate. This year’s tournament marks the 19th time the institution is taking part in the AUUS Games, underlining its long-standing commitment to university sports.
