Andrew Nkwasibwe Bakiza has been sworn in as the new president of the Uganda Chess Federation, beginning a four year term after taking over from Eng. Emmanuel Mwaka at a ceremony held on Friday at Kati Kati in Lugogo.
Bakiza, previously the federation treasurer, assumes office following elections held on November 30, 2025, with the new executive committee tasked with steering Ugandan chess into its next phase of growth and professionalism.
He will be deputised by Allan Benjamin Mande as vice president, while Walter Okas takes over as general secretary. David Muwanguzi was confirmed as treasurer, with Victoria Nakirya joining the executive committee as woman representative.
In his maiden address after taking the oath, Bakiza said his leadership would prioritise players and transparent governance, with a strong focus on improving welfare and management structures within the sport.
He committed to accountable leadership, sustainable funding, and deliberate investment in player development as key pillars of his administration.
“Players have been facing poor welfare, including very little prize money. How can a player receive only one million shillings after winning a tournament, This is one of the most burning issues I want to address during my term in office.” says Nkwasibwe.
Stakeholders present welcomed the new leadership, expressing optimism that the changes at the top will help attract sponsorship, strengthen administration, and raise Uganda’s competitiveness on the regional and international chess scene.
