Cricket Uganda has extended Evelyn Kabongerwa Biribonwa Shinyekwa’s tenure as Acting Chief Executive Officer for a further year, reaffirming its confidence in her leadership following her initial nine months in the role.
Shinyekwa, the first woman to serve as Acting CEO of Cricket Uganda, will continue to steer the association as it seeks to strengthen its institutional structures, modernise operations and position Ugandan cricket for sustainable growth at both national and international levels.
The extension follows what Cricket Uganda described as a period marked by professionalism, innovation and inclusive governance.
A Chartered Accountant with more than two decades of experience in financial management, governance, audit and organisational development, Shinyekwa brings a strong administrative background to the role.
She holds an MBA from Makerere University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Business Administration and Management. Her career has included senior positions across the public, private and non profit sectors, alongside previous roles at Cricket Uganda as Finance Manager and Acting CEO.
During the extended tenure, Cricket Uganda says Shinyekwa will focus on modernising operational systems, expanding grassroots pathways to identify and nurture talent across the country, strengthening corporate partnerships and improving Uganda’s competitiveness on the continental and global stage.
Speaking after the announcement, Shinyekwa said, “I look forward to building a stronger, more efficient, and more inclusive cricket system—one that nurtures talent, inspires excellence, and positions Uganda firmly on the global cricket map.”
Cricket Uganda chairman Jackson Kavuma welcomed the decision, describing Shinyekwa as a proven and respected leader within the sport.
“I am thrilled to welcome Evelyn as our new CEO. She brings a wealth of experience and stands among the first female and most respected leaders in cricket nationally. Her track record speaks for itself,” Kavuma said.
He added, “Cricket Uganda is gaining a world class sports administrator and more importantly an individual of utmost integrity, character, and a high performance mindset. Throughout her career, she has been an inspirational trailblazer and I am extremely proud that she will become the first female CEO of Cricket Uganda. This is an exciting time for cricket. Evelyn’s appointment will help galvanise and reinvigorate cricket in Uganda.”
Kavuma also pointed to her understanding of the game beyond the local scene, saying, “I have been greatly impressed by her deep understanding of the cricketing landscape both locally and internationally as well as her vision and passion for what lies ahead. I am confident that we now have a leader who will maximise our potential as a cricketing nation as we embark on the next phase of our journey.”
The extension of Shinyekwa’s tenure signals what Cricket Uganda views as a new phase for the sport, underpinned by a commitment to professional excellence, inclusivity and long term success.
