Hosts Morocco opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a disciplined 2–0 victory over Comoros on Sunday night, overcoming early frustration to secure three points in front of a full Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Second-half goals from Brahim Diaz and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi settled a contest which demanded patience from the Atlas Lions, as Comoros defended with organisation and confidence.
Morocco missed a golden chance to take an early lead after 11 minutes when a foul on Díaz earned a penalty.
Yannick Pandor produced a sharp save to deny Soufiane Rahimi, shifting momentum in Comoros’ favour. The hosts then suffered another setback as captain Romain Saiss limped off injured, drawing concern from the home crowd.
The first half ended with further frustration after VAR ruled out Morocco appeals for a second penalty, leaving the score level at the break.
Relief arrived nine minutes after half-time. Noussair Mazraoui surged down the left and delivered a precise pass into the area, where Díaz struck decisively to beat Pandor and lift the stadium.
Morocco pressed for control and found a decisive second goal in the 74th minute. Introduced to add sharpness, El Kaabi produced a moment of brilliance, executing an acrobatic overhead kick which flew into the net and sealed the result.
“We put a lot of pressure on ourselves,” Morocco coach Walid Regragui said. “After the missed penalty and Romain’s injury, the start was difficult. At half-time we made adjustments and the players reacted quickly.”
Comoros coach Stefano Cusin praised his side’s discipline despite defeat. “We were solid defensively. Against a team like Morocco, you must take your chances,” he said. “The players showed a good face and our people can be proud.”
The win sends the homeboys Morocco top of Group A ahead of Mali and Zambia, who open their campaign today, Monday, December 22.
For Comoros, a meeting with Zambia on Boxing Day will offer a clearer test of their hopes in only their second AFCON appearance.
