Barbarians won the Ngo League Season 5 title after defeating Ba Musaayi Muto 2-0 in the Guinness powered grand finale played on Saturday, December 20th at King’s Park Arena in Bweyogerere.
Celestine Nasimolo proved decisive in the first half, scoring twice in quick succession to put Barbarians in firm control of the contest. He opened the scoring early before doubling his tally just three minutes later, setting the tone for a dominant display.
Nasimolo nearly completed a first half hat trick moments later, but Ba Musaayi Muto goalkeeper Byamukama produced an excellent save as Barbarians continued to apply pressure. Despite trailing, Ba Musaayi Muto pushed forward in search of a response, registering seven shots on goal, but Barbarians goalkeeper Esther O. remained solid throughout.
It was a frustrating evening for Ivan Otai, the season’s top scorer, who was well marshalled and kept quiet for the duration of the final as Barbarians protected their advantage.
Earlier in the day, Barbarians had booked their place in the final by overcoming Ba Guy, while Ba Musaayi Muto edged Horn Bills in the semifinals played at the same venue.
At full time, celebrations followed as Namilyango College Old Boys Association vice president John Paul Jingo and Ngo League interim chairman Michael Mitti handed the championship trophy to Barbarians captain Andrew Hygie.
“What a season we have had. Thanks to everyone who supported us. We are already looking forward to retaining the crown next season,” Hygie said.
League spokesperson Thomas Agaba praised the competitiveness and organisation of the season, crediting strong partner support for its success.
“This season has been one of the most competitive and well organised we have had so far. The growth we have seen gives us confidence that the Ngo League will only get better in the coming seasons,” Agaba said.
Guinness once again played a central role throughout the finale, enhancing the matchday experience with football and entertainment from start to finish.
“We are excited to see the Ngo League end on such a high note. Alumni leagues are a big component of alumni reunions and Guinness is proudly associated with various leagues across the country,” said Mercy Atwongyeire, the Project Manager for Premium Beer at Uganda Breweries Limited.
The season finale also featured performances from hip hop star Navio, with DJ Sharon Shaz and other acts providing entertainment as the campaign closed on a high. The Ngo League is expected to return around May next year for Season 6.
