The Uganda Baseball and Softball Association has confirmed the return of the National Baseball League in January 2026, ending a four year absence from structured domestic competition and marking a reset for the sport’s competitive pathway.
Association president Ssempa John Bosco said the league’s comeback is aimed at restoring regular competition after a prolonged period that stalled player development. With no official fixtures over the past four years, many players struggled to maintain match fitness, sharpen their skills, or gain meaningful exposure, leaving a visible gap in the country’s baseball ecosystem.
In the absence of a formal league, players and coaches organised informal competitions, including Christmas baseball tournaments, to keep the game active and preserve competitive standards. These stopgap events helped sustain interest but could not fully replace the structure and consistency of a national league.
As part of the revival programme, the association will stage an Under-15 Girls Baseball Tournament from January 6 to 11 at Gayaza Baseball Stadium. The youth competition will serve as the opening activity of the new season and reflects a renewed focus on grassroots development and the growth of women’s baseball.
Officials believe the league’s return will reintroduce stability, clear progression pathways, and regular competition, elements seen as critical to rebuilding the sport at club and national team level after years without an organised domestic calendar.
