Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo is set to make his long-awaited TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) debut, after an injury kept him out of the previous edition.
Speaking from Cameroon’s training base, the 25-year-old expressed his pride in finally representing the Indomitable Lions at Africa’s flagship event.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” Mbeumo told CAFOnline. “In my family, we’ve always watched the AFCON… it’s a very special competition.”
Mbeumo arrives in Morocco with six goals in 16 Premier League appearances this season.
Despite Cameroon’s rich history—including winning the title the last time Morocco hosted in 1988—Mbeumo says he feels no added pressure, only a motivation to win.
Cameroon faces a tough opening round against Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, and Mozambique.
Head coach David Pagou has called on Mbeumo to be a leader on the pitch, utilizing his dribbling and playmaking to “make a difference.”
With his clinical form and creative spark, Mbeumo is expected to be a focal point for the Indomitable Lions as they aim to reclaim their status at the top of African football.
