Ruben Amorim has debuted a new-look back four at Manchester United, insisting the tactical shift was his own plan and not a surrender to media pressure.
After sticking rigidly to a back three since his arrival, Amorim switched systems to secure a vital Boxing Day clean sheet against Newcastle.
“If I changed because of the media, it would be the end for me as a manager,” Amorim stated.
He explained that while he initially used a back three to build a team identity, he now wants the squad to be flexible, especially as they navigate a “depleted” roster.
Seven senior players are out for the upcoming clash against Wolves, including Mason Mount, who is a fresh doubt.
Despite his pleas to play, captain Bruno Fernandes (hamstring) is ruled out for Wolves. Amorim praised his leadership, noting that Fernandes has been coaching from the tunnel while injured.
Reinforcements like Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui are expected back from the Africa Cup of Nations by the end of next month.
Amorim concluded that United will no longer rely on three defenders “all the time,” signaling a permanent shift in his tactical approach at Old Trafford.
