AFCON 2025: Equatorial Guinea Stars Banned for Referee Abuse

CAF has suspended Equatorial Guinea captain Carlos Akapo and teammate Josete Miranda for four matches following “insulting and obscene” abuse directed at officials after their 1-0 loss to Sudan.

The outbursts followed a 74th-minute own goal that confirmed the “National Thunder’s” exit from the tournament.

While two matches of the ban are suspended for a year, both players will miss Wednesday’s final group game against Algeria.

Additionally:
• Feguifut (National Federation): Fined $10,000 for “excessive and abusive protests” by staff and players.
• Bertrand Traore (Burkina Faso): Fined $10,000 for offensive remarks made in a post-match interview following a loss to Angola.

CAF stated the behavior was a “serious breach of respect and fair play,” signaling a zero-tolerance approach to official harassment at the tournament.
