Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman has slammed CAF’s decision to move the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a four-year cycle, calling the move “a shame.”
CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced the overhaul on the eve of AFCON 2025, confirming the tournament will move to even-numbered years and occur every four years starting in 2028.
To fill the gap, CAF will launch an African Nations League in 2029.
“It is a shame as Africans are not able to get the tournament every two years like we are used to,” Lookman told Peoples Gazette. “It is a disappointment.”
The change ends a biennial tradition dating back to 1968, making it significantly harder for future players to match the record eight tournament appearances held by legends like Andre Ayew.
Despite the frustration, Lookman remains focused on the pitch. Nigeria heads into the Round of 16 with a perfect group stage record, chasing their fourth continental title.
