The highly anticipated Battle of the Year kickboxing bout between Moses Golola and Gen Fungu has been called off after a payment dispute derailed plans for the January 1, 2026 showdown at Akamwesi in Kyebando.
Sources close to the negotiations confirmed that the event promoter, Enock Events, failed to raise the funds required to meet the fighters’ financial demands, leading to the collapse of the fight just days before it was due to take place. The bout had been billed as one of the biggest kickboxing events of the year and had generated significant interest among fans.
Golola, a former world kickboxing champion, said the cancellation highlighted deeper issues in the organisation of major sporting events. He urged promoters to prioritise cooperation over competition when staging high profile fights.
“Event Promoters should work together and avoid greed because such big events succeed when there is cooperation and proper planning between different promoters,” said Golola.
Despite the setback, Golola remained upbeat about the year ahead, insisting the failed bout would not derail his plans for 2026 and expressing confidence that better organised events would come.
