Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United and a total breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy.
The decision, led by CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox, follows Amorim’s pointed post-match comments where he criticized his “head coach” title and hinted at boardroom interference.
Under the terms of his 2024 deal, United must pay out his contract in full, which was set to run until 2027.
Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher takes charge for Wednesday’s trip to Burnley.
Friction peaked over Amorim’s rigid 3-4-3 formation and a lack of January signings, specifically the failed pursuit of Antoine Semenyo.
Amorim presided over United’s worst-ever Premier League finish (15th last season) and an embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to League Two Grimsby Town.
Despite a £242m summer spend on players like Benjamin Sesko, the club remains 6th in the table.
The exit marks a major blow for Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS regime, which had publicly backed Amorim just three months ago.
United now begins the search for its seventh permanent manager since 2013.
