Gary Neville has called on Manchester United to “stop experimenting” after the club sacked manager Ruben Amorim on Monday.
Following a dismal 14-month tenure, Neville insists the board must prioritize a manager who “fits the club’s DNA” rather than tactical specialists who demand the club change its identity.
“The experiments have got to stop,” Neville told Sky Sports. “I’ve always been very proud of what this club is—adventurous, exciting football, playing young players and entertaining the crowd.”
Neville highlighted three key pillars for the next appointment:
• The Identity: He compared United to Barcelona, stating the club should “never change for anybody” and must return to “fast, attacking, and aggressive football.”
• The System: Neville admitted he was “stunned” by how poorly the players performed under Amorim’s signature 3-4-3 formation.
• The Timing: He urged the club to wait until the summer to find a permanent replacement, arguing that the current “manager pool” lacks the elite talent required to fix the “complete mess” at Old Trafford.
While Amorim’s honesty and “punchy” press conferences earned him some fans, Neville concluded that personality couldn’t save him:
“If the results are so poor, it doesn’t matter how likeable or honest you are. You’re going to get sacked at a club like United.”
