Zidane 2.0: France legend Zinedine Watches on as son Luca eyes AFCON Glory With Algeria
Luca Zidane is carving out his own legacy at the Africa Cup of Nations, proving he is far more than just “Zinedine’s son.”
The 27-year-old goalkeeper has been a revelation for the Fennec Foxes, keeping clean sheets in both of his starts against Sudan and Burkina Faso.
After being rested for the final group game, he is set to return to the starting XI tonight for Algeria’s high-stakes last-16 clash against DR Congo in Rabat.
Watching from the stands has been his father, France icon Zinedine Zidane. The 1998 World Cup winner, whose parents emigrated from Algeria, has been “feted” by supporters every time he appears on the stadium big screens.
“I try to be myself, to build my career on my own terms,” said Luca, who currently plays for Spanish side Granada. “Representing your country is something magnificent.”
Born in France, the former Real Madrid prospect opted to represent his grandparents’ nation after a knee injury to regular starter Alexandre Oukidja opened the door for him to shine on the continental stage.
With his famous father, mother, and brother all in attendance, Luca is determined to help Algeria reach the quarter-finals as he continues to build his career “step by step.”
