KCCA head coach Brian Ssenyondo did not hold back, following his team’s 2-0 defeat to Police FC at the Kira Road Arena on Tuesday, a result that dealt a heavy blow to their early title ambitions in the Uganda Premier League.
After a lackluster first half, Police broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute through Brian Obedi, who volleyed home following a header from Dennis Kalanzi. The hosts doubled their advantage later in the half, again with Kalanzi at the heart of the move, heading the ball for Bedia Ikamba to tap into an empty net.
Addressing the press, Ssenyondo was scathing in his post-match assessment, describing the performance as “substandard.”
“We didn’t play football,” he said bluntly. “They were better in everything, they won everything, first balls, second balls, 50-50s. If you allow the opponent to do that, you’re bound to lose.”
Asked why he thought the team performed so poorly, Ssenyondo did not mince words. “I think complacency. I think they thought the league was won after winning five games on the bounce,” he said.
He continued, emphasizing the long haul of the title race: “The league is won with the last game in May, you can’t win the league in five matches. This kind of performance is unacceptable, we should do better.
“We had to present ourselves well, and we did not do that today. We just came to play around, and we should not represent the club like this. It should be the last time we represent the club like this. It doesn’t matter who starts on the day.”
The loss marks KCCA FC’s second of the season, following a previous defeat to Vipers SC, and casts serious doubt over their ability to maintain their early-season momentum. The result left them second with 26 points, one behind leaders Vipers SC, who have played a game less.
