Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has called for “humility” as the host nation prepares for a high-stakes Afcon quarterfinal against Cameroon this Friday.
Despite topping their group and eliminating Tanzania in the Round of 16, the Atlas Lions have been dogged by criticism for being overly cautious. Regragui, however, remains unapologetic about his pragmatic approach.
“It’s a tournament that requires staying grounded, even if people do not want to understand that,” Regragui stated during Thursday’s press conference. “We have the humility to believe we can win, but we know what we are up against.”
This is a rematch of the 1988 semifinal where Cameroon knocked out hosts Morocco.
Defensive anchor Sofyan Amrabat remains a doubt, but attacker Hamza Igamane is fit to return.
With the pressure of being tournament favorites mounting, Regragui is banking on home support to carry his side through what he predicts will be a “clash that reverberates around the continent.”
