Injury Woes Hit Uganda Cranes Camp

Trabzonspor have emerged as serious contenders in the chase for Ugandan winger Rogers Mato, adding a new dimension to an already competitive transfer tussle involving Heart of Midlothian and FK Vardar.

Hearts were the first to initiate a concrete move for the 22-year-old, lodging an opening offer of around £300,000 earlier this month.

However, the Scottish club quickly hit a roadblock after Vardar rejected the proposal, making it clear that the figure was far below their expectations. The North Macedonian champions are understood to value Mato at close to £600,000 and are standing firm despite the interest gathering pace.

According to multiple reports in Turkey, Trabzonspor have now entered the picture, holding initial discussions and seeking clarity on Mato’s availability as they assess options to bolster their attacking department during the January transfer window. The Super Lig side are said to be closely following developments between Hearts and Vardar, with a potential move under consideration should the opportunity arise.

Vardar believe the growing list of suitors will strengthen their position and are confident that further bids could arrive before the window closes. Despite the rejected offer, Hearts have not abandoned their pursuit and continue to view Mato as a key target, even as they scan the market for alternatives.

Mato has built a strong reputation in Skopje thanks to his blistering pace, direct style and consistent attacking returns, qualities that have also translated to the international stage with the Uganda Cranes. His rise has not gone unnoticed, with several European clubs tracking his progress.

The winger’s contractual situation adds another layer of intrigue. His deal runs until December following a short-term extension, meaning Vardar face a strategic decision: cash in now or risk seeing his value diminish later in the year. For now, the club are prepared to hold their ground, convinced that competition between interested parties could work in their favour.
