KOBs Rugby Club has elected a new Executive Committee, marking the start of a fresh leadership cycle aimed at restoring competitiveness on the pitch and strengthening the club’s long term foundations.
The new leadership team was voted in on Sunday during a meeting held at the Nob View Hotel in Ntinda, with Darren Rutagwera taking over as Chairperson after previously serving as Vice Chairperson. He steps into the role at a time when the club is seeking to rebound from challenging recent seasons and reassert itself among Uganda’s leading rugby sides.
Rutagwera is joined by Simon Peter Kasito as Vice Chairperson, Richard Mutabazi as Secretary, and Muriel Aloka Atai, who continues as Treasurer following a period in which the club recorded improved financial discipline. Edwin Ssempebwa has been elected as the players’ representative, while Brian Odong has been appointed Director of Rugby to oversee the club’s technical direction.
Speaking after his election, Rutagwera acknowledged the difficulties KOBs has faced but expressed confidence in the club’s future. He said the new committee will prioritise improved performance by strengthening the coaching structure, placing the right people in key roles, and building a balanced and competitive squad capable of challenging consistently.
Financial sustainability has also been identified as a key focus area. Rutagwera noted that modern rugby presents growing financial demands, and revealed that the club is actively pursuing targeted sponsorship partnerships to support its ambitions on and off the field.
Beyond results, the new administration is keen to deepen the club’s connection with its community, underlining the belief that KOBs’ strength extends beyond match days. Restoring the club’s culture and identity is central to the vision, with plans to rebuild a winning mentality within the next 12 to 18 months.
Rutagwera highlighted continuity in the treasury, stronger communication through the secretariat, and the introduction of a Director of Rugby as critical pillars in driving technical growth and organisational stability.
Founded in 1963, KOBs is one of Uganda’s most successful rugby clubs, boasting 13 Premiership titles, nine Uganda Cup victories and multiple National 7s championships. The club is currently celebrating its diamond jubilee year.
Voting at the meeting was restricted to fully paid members, who are also entitled to access the club’s full technical and financial reports. The club has since congratulated the newly elected Executive Committee and wished them success as they work to restore a winning culture and secure a sustainable future on and off the pitch.
