Uganda Cranes forward Rogers Mato could yet have a decisive role to play in Hearts of Midlothian’s pursuit of the Scottish Premiership title this season, according to reports emerging from Scotland.
Both Sky Sports Scotland and the Edinburgh News report that the league leaders have reached an agreement with North Macedonian side Vardar over the transfer of the 22-year-old during the ongoing January transfer window.
The former KCCA FC striker has been at the centre of intense transfer speculation for weeks, with several clubs circling for his signature.
Turkish outfit Trabzonspor and Scottish giants Hearts have been the most persistent suitors.
Vardar, however, have been reluctant to cash in on their prized asset, repeatedly hiking their valuation in an attempt either to scare off interest or force a substantial fee.
The Macedonian champions were reportedly holding out for around €1.5 million.
What made the situation even more intriguing is the fact that Mato is in the final five months of his contract.
With the risk of losing him for free at the end of the season growing, Vardar attempted to push through a move to MLS side Sporting Kansas City.
The player, however, had other ideas.
Mato made it clear that his priority was to remain in Europe, and earlier this month he agreed a pre-contract with Hearts, paving the way for a summer move.
“We are delighted to announce that we have reached an agreement with Ugandan international forward Rogers Mato to become a Hearts player in the summer,” the club announced on their official website.
“The 22-year-old will join the club in July, upon the expiration of his contract with North Macedonian side Vardar, and will pen a three-year deal.”
But the story has taken yet another twist, one that could see Hearts land their man much earlier than planned.
With the Edinburgh club now pushing to complete the deal in January, Vardar stand to pocket a fee rather than risk losing Mato for nothing.
The move has reportedly been accelerated following an injury to club captain Lawrence Shankland, who is expected to be sidelined for around two months.
As a result, Hearts are keen to reinforce immediately rather than wait until the summer.
Paperwork is said to be underway, including the former Proline FC forward’s immigration process ahead of a possible move to Tynecastle Park this month.
The timing could hardly be more dramatic.
Hearts, who sit top of the 12-team Scottish Premiership table with 50 points from 22 matches, are preparing for a blockbuster clash against defending champions Celtic this Sunday at Tynecastle.
Celtic currently trail Hearts by six points, having played the same number of games, making the fixture a potential title-defining encounter.
Vardar’s hesitation to sell Mato is understandable.
The Ugandan international is the league’s joint top scorer with 12 goals in just 13 appearances this season.
Like Hearts, Vardar themselves are leading their domestic league, holding a two-point advantage at the summit, and losing their best player mid-season is far from ideal.
Nevertheless, circumstances have left the Macedonian side with little choice.
Mato’s rise has been just as impressive on the international stage.
Since making his Uganda Cranes debut in 2022, he has earned 41 caps, scoring eight goals.
Most recently, he found the net at his first AFCON tournament in Morocco, scoring against Nigeria.
Should the January move be completed, Rogers Mato would not only take a major step forward in his career, he could also find himself at the heart of a historic Scottish Premiership title challenge.
