Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has joined French side Marseille on loan for the remainder of the season in search of regular first-team football.
Despite signing a new contract until 2030 last summer, the 18-year-old has seen his opportunities limited following Arsenal’s heavy investment in “win-now” signings like Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke.
Though Nwaneri made 12 appearances this season, he failed to start a single Premier League match.
Manager Mikel Arteta admitted the move was essential for the England U21 international’s growth: “Ethan wasn’t having enough minutes. The last thing I want to do is cut his development.”
Arteta pointed to William Saliba’s successful past loan at Marseille and the “courageous” leadership of Roberto de Zerbi as key factors in choosing the Ligue 1 club.
Nwaneri’s departure underscores the narrowing path for academy talent at the Emirates.
Fellow graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly has also seen a significant drop in playing time this season as the Gunners—currently seven points clear at the top of the table—prioritize experienced stars in their pursuit of the title.
