After five years as the cornerstone of Aston Villa’s defense, World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez finds himself at a career crossroads.
Despite Villa sitting third in the Premier League, the 33-year-old is facing intense scrutiny following a series of uncharacteristic errors and a failed summer move to Manchester United.
The friction began in August when a move to Old Trafford collapsed. United manager Ruben Amorim was reportedly overruled by club data, with the board opting for younger prospect Senne Lammens instead.
Since then, while Martinez leads the league in save percentage (76.1%), he also leads in errors resulting in goals (3)—including high-profile blunders against Liverpool, Arsenal, and Everton.
“It feels like his focus has been diverted slightly,” former England keeper Paul Robinson told BBC Sport. Mystery also surrounds Martinez’s fitness, following several late withdrawals after pre-match warm-ups. Meanwhile, backup Marco Bizot has proved a reliable deputy, keeping five clean sheets in 11 appearances.
Though Unai Emery continues to publicly back his “number one,” Martinez is now being linked with Inter Milan. With the club expected to assess his future this summer, the veteran’s long-term stay at Villa Park—once thought certain—now looks increasingly fragile.
