Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has expressed his “horror” over the recent fatal shootings of two Minnesota residents by federal immigration agents.
The 22-year-old Frenchman spoke out following the deaths of intensive care nurse Alex Pretti and Renee Good, both 37, during a six-week ICE operation ordered by the Trump administration.
Despite being advised by the San Antonio Spurs’ PR team to remain “politically correct,” Wembanyama refused to stay silent.
“Every day I wake up and see the news, and I’m horrified,” Wembanyama said. “I think it’s crazy that some people might make it seem like the murder of civilians is acceptable.”
Wembanyama also praised countryman and New York Knicks player Guerschon Yabusele for calling on the U.S. government to change its tactics.
While acknowledging that speaking out as a foreigner carries a “cost” and potential repercussions, Wembanyama stated that his concerns for the country he lives in outweighed the risk of silence.
