Kenya will shut Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, from February 2026 as part of a major renovation push aimed at meeting CAF standards for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The directive, issued by Sports Kenya, will see the country’s two largest and most used venues closed for extensive upgrades designed to reach what officials have described as Morocco-level AFCON standards.
The decision immediately creates a logistical challenge for Kenyan Premier League clubs, many of whom rely on the two stadiums as home grounds and must now secure alternative venues midway through the season.
The closures come as Kenya continues work on the new Raila Odinga International Stadium, which is intended to be a flagship venue for AFCON 2027.
The 60,000-seater facility is now reported to be 80 percent complete and will feature a high-tech hybrid playing surface and an ETFE roof, aligning it with modern international stadium specifications.
Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, is set to co-host AFCON 2027, placing increased pressure on host nations to deliver venues that meet CAF’s strict requirements.
