Tottenham captain Cristian Romero is under fire following a “reckless” straight red card that paved the way for a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.
The dismissal, Romero’s second of the season and sixth overall for Spurs—came just days after he publicly criticized the club’s board over recruitment.
His lunge on United’s Casemiro in the 30th minute was deemed “serious foul play” by officials, leaving a shorthanded Tottenham squad to play an hour with ten men.
Romero faces a four-match ban, ruling him out of domestic action until mid-March. He is the first Premier League player to be sent off twice this season and holds the record for the most red cards (4) in the league since 2021.
Despite the “irresponsible” tag from pundits like Danny Murphy, manager Thomas Frank insists Romero will remain captain. “He is sorry… he is one of our most important players,” Frank stated.
With 10 senior players already sidelined and rivals West Ham gaining ground, the loss leaves Spurs looking over their shoulders at a looming relegation scrap.
