Liverpool’s major January acquisition, Jeremy Jacquet, faces a long spell on the sidelines after suffering a “serious” shoulder injury during Rennes’ 3-1 defeat to Lens on Saturday.
The 20-year-old French defender, who completed a £60m move to Anfield last week, fell awkwardly in the 69th minute and left the pitch in visible distress.
Rennes manager Habib Beye confirmed the severity of the injury, stating, “It’s definitely quite serious.”
Jacquet signed for Liverpool last week but is staying at Rennes until the end of the season.
A heavy fall on his left shoulder led to him being replaced by Mahamadou Nagida.
Described by Arne Slot as a “very big talent,” Liverpool beat Chelsea to his signature after failing to land Marc Guehi last summer.
While he wasn’t due at Anfield until July, the injury is a concern for his development and Rennes’ European push.
