Mukasa Shines Bright on Maiden Start For Leicester

Divine Mukasa could hardly have scripted a more eye-catching introduction to life at English Championship outfit and 2015/16 Premier League champions Leicester City.

Handed his first start less than two weeks after arriving on loan from Manchester City, the young attacker delivered a statement performance, getting on the scoresheet and providing an assist in a pulsating 4-3 defeat to Southampton in the English Championship on Tuesday night.

The Englishman of Ugandan descent wasted no time in making his presence felt. Barely nine minutes had ticked by when Mukasa found space outside the box and calmly converted Leicester’s opener, sparking early belief among the Foxes faithful.

His bright movement and confidence on the ball repeatedly troubled Southampton’s backline, underlining why Leicester moved swiftly to bring him in during the January window.

Mukasa was not done there. As Leicester surged forward in the opening quarter-hour, the 18-year-old turned provider, slipping a well-weighted pass into the path of Ghana international Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, who made it 3-0.

In between Mukasa’s goal and assist, Zambian striker Patson Daka had doubled Leicester’s advantage, capping a blistering start that left Southampton reeling.

At the interval, Leicester were in complete control, holding a commanding three-goal cushion and looking set for a memorable night. However, the contest unravelled dramatically after the restart.

Defensive lapses and a loss of composure allowed Southampton to claw their way back, eventually overturning the deficit to snatch a 4-3 victory in a chaotic second half.

Despite the painful collapse, Mukasa’s individual display stood out as a rare bright spot in an otherwise bruising evening for the Foxes. His composure in front of goal, sharp decision-making, and willingness to take responsibility in the final third offered a glimpse of the attacking spark Leicester have been craving.

Mukasa only completed his loan switch from Manchester City earlier this month in search of consistent minutes at senior level. The Southampton fixture marked his first start for the club, coming just days after he made his Leicester debut as a late substitute in a narrow 2-1 defeat to Birmingham at the weekend.

For Leicester supporters, the result will sting. But the emergence of Mukasa as a genuine attacking option provides a timely boost as the club looks to steady itself in a demanding Championship campaign. They sit 21st on the 24-team table, with 32 points in as many games.
