Arsenal’s bid for their first Premier League title in 22 years suffered a massive blow on Wednesday, as a two-goal lead vanished in a -2 draw against bottom-placed Wolves.
Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapie put the Gunners 2-0 up by the 56th minute.
Hugo Bueno pulled one back for Wolves before 19-year-old debutant Tom Edozie forced a 94th-minute equalizer following a defensive mix-up between David Raya and Gabriel.
This is the first time in Premier League history a bottom-of-the-table side has avoided defeat against the leaders after trailing by two goals.
The result means the title is no longer in Arsenal’s control. If Manchester City (currently five points behind with a game in hand) win their remaining 12 matches—including a home clash against Arsenal—they will be crowned champions.
“The word ‘bottle’ will be used quite a bit in the next few days. It is in Manchester City’s hands now.” — Alan Smith, former Arsenal forward.
Mikel Arteta’s side has won only two of their last seven league games. They must now face back-to-back London derbies against Tottenham and Chelsea to keep their season alive.
“We have to blame ourselves,” Arteta admitted. “We didn’t show anything close to the standards required.”
