Makerere University has closed its Main Sports Ground with immediate effect as a Shs 21.8 billion redevelopment project begins, positioning the facility as a training venue for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.
The site has been handed to the UPDF Engineering Brigade to carry out the works.
The closure, confirmed from February 17, 2026, has forced adjustments to the university sports calendar.
Student athletes are now training at alternative grounds, with priority given to football and rugby programs as administrators manage limited space during construction.
The project forms part of a wider government plan coordinated through the National Council of Sports and the Ministry of Defence.
Oversight will be provided by the Ministry of Works and Transport to ensure compliance with international standards set by the Confederation of African Football.
Plans include a new CAF compliant grass pitch suitable for football and rugby, a 1,700 seat pavilion, an eight lane athletics track, upgraded dressing rooms, floodlights for night matches, parking space, and an on site borehole to reduce maintenance costs.
The Engineering Brigade has indicated an eight month completion target, aiming for handover by October 2026.
The redevelopment has brought short term disruption to campus sport, with university officials urging careful scheduling while additional recreational options are explored.
