James Milner has officially become the all-time appearance leader in Premier League history, surpassing Gareth Barry during Brighton’s clash with Brentford on Saturday.
The 40-year-old midfielder earned his 654th cap after being named in Fabian Hurzeler’s starting XI at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The milestone follows a 24-year career that began as a 16-year-old at Leeds United in 2002, spanning spells at Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
Brighton boss Hurzeler hailed Milner as a “role model,” citing his relentless discipline and work ethic as the keys to his longevity.
“There’s no surprise why he’s where he is… he is never satisfied,” Hurzeler told BBC Match of the Day.
While some fans have questioned Milner’s limited role this season, his trophy cabinet—featuring three Premier League titles and a Champions League winner’s medal—cements his status as a modern great.
With his contract expiring this summer, Milner now stands alone at the top of the English game.
