Ugandan rally driver Yasin Nasser has stepped up preparations for next month’s Safari Rally in Kenya, setting his sights on reclaiming the African Rally Championship title.
The event will run from March 12 to 15 in Naivasha and Nakuru and stands as one of the most demanding rounds on both the World Rally Championship and African Rally Championship calendars. Nasser is among four Ugandan drivers entered for the rally as the country bids for a strong continental showing.
Speaking during a training session in Mityana, Nasser expressed confidence in his build up and equipment ahead of the trip to Kenya.
“Preparations are going on very well. The car is in perfect condition, and the team is working tirelessly to ensure we are competitive,” Nasser told NBS Sport.
“Our target this season is clear — to fight for and reclaim the African Rally Championship title.”
Nasser will compete in his Ford Fiesta R5, the car that has previously taken him close to the continental crown. After narrowly missing out on the title in past campaigns, he views this season as another opportunity to finish the job.
The Safari Rally is expected to draw a strong field. Kenyan drivers Karan Patel, Carl Tundo, and Jasmeet Chana headline the local charge, alongside Hamza Anwar and Samman Singh Vohra, among others.
Despite the depth of competition and the notoriously punishing conditions, Nasser remains upbeat.
“Safari Rally is always tough — the terrain, the weather, and the competition. But we are ready for the challenge. We want to make Uganda proud,” he added.
Uganda’s line up will also feature Duncan Mubiru, popularly known as Kikankane, as well as Oscar Ntambi and Timothy Gawaya, completing a quartet aiming to challenge Africa’s best.
With national pride and continental honours on the line, the focus now turns to Kenya, where Uganda’s drivers will test themselves against one of rallying’s most demanding events.
