Tayebwa Launches 2026 Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon, Organisers Target 20,000 Runners

The 2026 Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon has been officially launched by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa at Sheraton Kampala Hotel, with government leaders hailing the event as a growing force in Uganda’s tourism and economic development.

The fifth edition was unveiled in Kampala in the presence of several government officials, who commended the marathon for transforming into a major sporting and tourism attraction. They noted that the race continues to shine a spotlight on the Rwenzori region, driving business to hotels and hospitality enterprises while creating income opportunities for local communities.

Eight Athletes Named for SA Indoor Team

Since its inception four years ago with just 800 athletes, the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon has grown into Uganda’s only World Athletics Label Road Race recognised marathon held to global standards. The recognition has elevated its profile on the international athletics calendar and strengthened its appeal to elite and amateur runners alike.

In 2025, the fourth edition attracted more than 6,000 runners from 54 countries, underlining its expanding global footprint. Organisers now believe the event is ready for another significant leap.

Marathon organiser Amos Wekesa outlined ambitious plans for this year’s race, projecting a record 20,000 participants from across the world. He also confirmed that the winner of the 42 kilometre race will take home 40,000 US dollars, one of the most lucrative prize purses in the region.

“This marathon has kept on growing, Last year we had over 6,000 athletes from 54 countries, but this year our target is to have 20,000 athletes from different countries participate in this year’s edition,” says Wekesa.

With strong government backing, rising international interest and an attractive prize package, organisers say the 2026 edition is poised to deepen its economic impact and further entrench the Rwenzori region as a premier destination for sports tourism.
