Lugogo Hosts Revival of Kateregga Memorial Schools Championship

The Kateregga Memorial Schools and Institutions Table Tennis Championship has returned after a ten year absence, with organizers positioning it as a key platform to revive grassroots competition and identify new talent.

Established by the Uganda Table Tennis Association in memory of the late Kateregga, the championship was created to promote the sport at school level and strengthen the development pathway for young players.

Its revival marks a renewed push to rebuild competitive structures across primary, secondary and university institutions.

The 2026 edition, which started on February 27, concludes on March 1 at the Lugogo Arena. Participants from across the country are competing in boys and girls singles and doubles categories, with organizers closely monitoring performances.

Outstanding players from the tournament are expected to earn selection to the national team as Uganda steps up preparations for the forthcoming Africa Championship.

Officials say the championship will once again serve as a critical scouting ground and a foundation for long term growth in the sport.
