Modern Court Signals Fresh Push for Talent Development at Sir Apollo Kaggwa Kira

Sir Apollo Kaggwa Primary School Kira has officially opened a new state of the art basketball court, reinforcing its focus on blending academic excellence with structured talent development.

The facility was unveiled on Friday afternoon in a ceremony held under the theme “Dribble Your Way to Greatness,” drawing pupils, parents, staff, and leading figures from Uganda’s basketball community. The event was hosted by Sera Yaweh of NBS Sport.

Leadership from the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations attended, led by Vice President Administration Hudson Ssegamwenge, who officiated as chief guest. Also present were players from National Basketball League champions Namuwongo Blazers and JT Jaguars.

The ribbon cutting marked the official commissioning of the court before it hosted an exhibition game between Namuwongo Blazers and JT Jaguars. The match turned the launch into a live showcase of elite basketball, giving pupils a close look at the level the school hopes to nurture through its programmes.

In his remarks, Ssegamwenge praised the school’s leadership for investing in holistic education, noting its participation in national competitions such as the FUBA Primary Schools League and the Father Grimes National Schools Chess Championship. He said FUBA would continue working with schools to strengthen grassroots basketball structures.

Headmistress Hajjat Faridah Bukirwa thanked the school management for prioritising infrastructure that supports talent development. She urged parents to actively back their children through the institution’s Talent Development Programme, which includes football, basketball, chess, home economics, music, dance and drama, taekwondo, art and craft, badminton, netball, and volleyball.

She also encouraged enrolment into Thunderbolt Sports Academy, the school’s official academy offering specialised basketball and football training, as well as participation in the Kampala Junior League to widen competitive exposure.

Pupils later interacted with top players and received autographs from their heroes. Among them was Ivan Muhwezi, a shooting guard for Namuwongo Blazers and former captain of City Oilers. Muhwezi previously represented Uganda at the 2016 U18 African Championship in Kigali and has won multiple National Basketball League titles.

Also in attendance was James Okello, the 2019 Uganda Sports Press Association Male Basketball Player of the Year, who has lifted league titles with both City Oilers and Namuwongo Blazers.

Founded in 1996, the Sir Apollo Kaggwa Schools have built a reputation for combining strong academic performance with character formation and co curricular engagement. Alongside sister institutions such as City Parents’ School Rubaga, established in 1999, the fraternity continues to expand its footprint through deliberate investment in modern facilities and structured talent pathways.

The new court at Kira adds to that vision, positioning the school to play a larger role in developing the next generation of Uganda’s basketball talent.
