Kigezi Homeboyz boosted their push for promotion with a 1-0 victory over Wakiso Giants in the FUFA Big League at Al Madina Ground in Kabale, sealed by a late header from Dominic Abonga.
The decisive moment arrived in the 75th minute when the South Sudan striker rose highest to meet Timothy Beinomugisha’s curling free kick and powered home. It was Abonga’s first goal for Kigezi since joining from Koryom FC and it proved enough in a match defined by discipline and few clear openings.
Both sides struggled to create clear chances in a tightly contested encounter, with midfield battles dominating large spells. Kigezi, however, remained patient and composed, eventually finding the breakthrough through a well worked set piece.
The result lifts the Sadick Sempigi coached side to 29 points from 17 matches, keeping them firmly in contention for a place in the Uganda Premier League. They are level on points with Ntugasaze, Paidha Black Angels and Blacks Power, underlining how tight the promotion race has become heading into the decisive phase of the season.
Kigezi now turn their focus to a crucial showdown against fellow promotion hopefuls Ntugasaze on Sunday, March 8.
Wakiso Giants, meanwhile, stay just above the relegation zone on 19 points and will aim to respond when they host Mbale Heroes in their next outing.
