UEFA has handed Tottenham Hotspur a suspended ban on selling tickets to away supporters and a series of fines following “racist and discriminatory” behavior during a Champions League clash in Germany.
The disciplinary action stems from an incident during Spurs’ 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park on January 28. According to European football’s governing body, three supporters were identified making Nazi salutes toward the home crowd.
UEFA confirmed the ban on away ticket sales is suspended for a probationary period of one year. In addition to the suspended hardware, the club has been fined £26,000 (€30,000) for the discriminatory conduct and an additional £1,966 (€2,250) for objects thrown by fans during the match.
Tottenham acted swiftly in response to the ruling, condemning the actions of the individuals involved and confirming that they have already been identified and banned for life.
“We can confirm that all three individuals found to be making Nazi salutes towards Eintracht Frankfurt fans have been identified and have received indefinite bans under the club’s sanctions and banning policy,” a club spokesperson said in a statement.
The club described the behavior of the minority as “utterly abhorrent” and “disgusting,” stating that such actions are in no way reflective of the values of the club or its broader fanbase.
“The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and has therefore taken the strongest possible action,” the statement continued.
The incident is the latest in a series of high-profile disciplinary cases involving far-right imagery in European football.
Just last week, Real Madrid opened an investigation into a similar incident involving a supporter performing a Nazi salute during a fixture against Benfica.
For Tottenham, the suspended ban serves as a final warning. Any further instances of discriminatory behavior by supporters over the next 12 months could trigger an immediate prohibition of Spurs fans traveling to European away fixtures.
