Michael Carrick has admitted Manchester United may need to sign a left winger this summer, just months after the club offloaded almost all their wide options under former boss Ruben Amorim.
Historically built on legendary wingers like George Best and Cristiano Ronaldo, United now find themselves with a squad strangely devoid of them.
Under Amorim’s tactical shift, the club sanctioned a massive exodus:
• Antony: Sold to Real Betis for £21.65m.
• Alejandro Garnacho: Joined Chelsea in a £40m deal.
• Jadon Sancho: Currently at Aston Villa; expected to leave permanently this summer.
• Marcus Rashford: On loan at Barcelona, who have a £26m option to buy.
The clearing of the decks has left Amad Diallo as the only orthodox winger available to Carrick.
While United were prepared to spend £65m on Antoine Semenyo in January, he opted for Manchester City, leaving a gap in the squad that Carrick describes as a “flexibility” issue.
United are now linked with RB Leipzig’s 19-year-old sensation Yan Diomande, who could cost £70m, and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon.
However, recruitment remains complicated. The club is also prioritizing a midfield overhaul as captain Casemiro prepares to leave, while £50m signing Manuel Ugarte has struggled for minutes under the current regime.
“It’s definitely something to look at, for sure,” Carrick said regarding the left-wing vacancy.
For now, the interim boss must rely on makeshift options like Matheus Cunha and wing-back Patrick Dorgu to provide the width United once took for granted.
