Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has declared he will not retire from Formula 1 until the sport returns to Africa, reveals a new report ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.
The 41-year-old Ferrari driver, who identifies as half-African, admitted he has been “chasing” F1 bosses for years to add a race on the continent.
“I don’t want to leave the sport without getting to race there,” Hamilton said. “I’m going to be here for a while until that happens.”
Hamilton also issued a powerful critique of how Western powers, specifically the UK, France, Spain, and Portugal, have historically exploited Africa’s resources.
“I’m really hoping that the people that are running those different countries all unite and take Africa back,” he added.
Despite his advocacy, a race in Africa remains unlikely before 2030 following failed talks with South Africa and Rwanda.
Entering his second season with Ferrari, Hamilton says he has “rediscovered” himself after a difficult, winless 2025. “I kind of lost sight of who I was,” he admitted. “That person’s gone. You won’t see them again. I’m much happier now.”
