The Minister of State for Sports, , has urged Uganda’s golfers to dig deep as the Victoria Cup teed off at the on Wednesday.
Ogwang officiated the official opening of the tournament, which runs from 5th to 7th March, and praised both Uganda and Kenya for sustaining the annual competition over the past decade. The Victoria Cup, a bilateral contest between the two nations, has grown into a key fixture on the regional golf calendar.
“I am not a golfer, but I have kept tract of the 10 year tournament that has been happening between Uganda and Kenya. That indeed means that Golf Unions of Uganda and Keya have worked tirelessly to shape young lives and secure the future of the sport,” Ogwang said. “The Tournament has given a chance to youngsters to showcase their talent at the highest level.”
Uganda enter this year’s edition as defending champions after lifting the trophy at last year. Ogwang made clear where his support lies but cautioned that the hosts must raise their level against a strong Kenyan side.
“I will, obviously root for Uganda to successfully defend the crown we won at Kipipiri Golf Course last year, but for that to happen, we must dig deep against a talented Kenyan team.”
The minister also called for discipline and competitiveness from both teams, stressing the broader value of the tournament beyond national rivalry.
“Regardless, I hope that all players showcase discipline, competitiveness and a hunger to win because if or when they do, the tournament will be richer for the gallery. May the best team win. May God bless both Uganda and Kenya for eternity.”
The three day contest now shifts fully to action on the course, with Uganda seeking a successful title defence on home soil in Entebbe.
