Kenya defeated Uganda 15.5 to 10.5 to win the Victoria Cup at Entebbe Golf Club, surpassing the 13.5 points required to claim the title in the annual match play contest.
The visitors sealed the trophy after a series of strong head to head performances across the board, overturning Uganda’s hopes of defending the crown they won last year at Kipipiri Golf Course.
Kenya’s charge was led by John Lejirma, who beat Joseph Reagan Akena 2 UP. Mwathi Gicheru secured a 3 and 2 victory over Amon Bwambale, while Daniel Kiragu edged Abdul Kakeeto 1 UP in a tight contest.
Junaid Manji also contributed with a 2 and 1 win against Andrew Ssekibejja, and Soni delivered one of the most dominant performances of the day with a 6 and 5 victory over Joseph Kasozi.
Uganda still picked up several notable wins on home soil.
Abdullah Kakooza defeated his opponent 4 and 2 after closing the match on the 16th hole, while Peter Mayende won 3 and 2. Team captain John Musiimenta also secured a 3 and 2 victory over Isaac Makokha.
Elsewhere, Elton Thembo edged Yuvraj Rajput 1 UP in a match that went to the final hole, while Godfrey Kambale beat Kevin Anyien 2 and 1.
Despite those efforts, Kenya’s overall consistency across the matches proved decisive as they accumulated enough points to reclaim the Victoria Cup.
