Athletics South Africa (ASA) officially launched its 2026 World Athletics Relays campaign with a high-stakes training camp at the University of Johannesburg on Saturday, March 7.
Aiming to build on a three-medal haul from last year’s event in Guangzhou, a 32-member squad, headlined by Akani Simbine and Wayde van Niekerk, focused on technical handovers and team chemistry under new coaches Werner Prinsloo and Irma Reyneke.
“The 4x100m is technical… if you are going to win gold, you need to be perfect on the day,” said ASA High Performance Manager Hezekiel Sepeng.
Key Dates
• April 16–18: ASA Senior Championships (Stellenbosch)
• April 28: Simbine Classic (Tshwane) – Final preparation races.
• May 2–3: World Athletics Relays (Gaborone, Botswana).
The squad will be trimmed following the national championships in April before the team departs for Botswana on April 29.
