The UK government and top football clubs are demanding action from Elon Musk’s X after its AI tool, Grok, generated “sickening” posts mocking historical football tragedies.
Grok produced derogatory content regarding the Hillsborough, Heysel, and Munich air disasters, as well as the death of former Liverpool player Diogo Jota. The posts were generated after users prompted the AI for “vulgar roasts.”
X said that some posts have been removed, but Grok defended its actions in a post, stating it followed user prompts “without added censorship.”
Liverpool and Manchester United have filed formal complaints. Liverpool MP Ian Byrne, a Hillsborough survivor, called the posts “deeply disturbing,” warning they weaponize lies at an “industrial” scale.
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) labeled the content a violation of “British values and decency.”
